After becoming the odd man out in the Chicago Cubs outfield, Alexander Canario was traded to the New York Mets and was hoping to be able to perform well enough in Spring Training to crack the Opening Day roster.
That, unfortunately, did not happen, and it is now expected that Canario will be removed from the Mets 40-man roster, as he is out of minor league options. If New York is unable to find a trade partner within the next five days, Canario will be waived and free to sign with any other team.
Canario was never able to find true playing time in Chicago, appearing in just 21 games and collecting only 42 at-bats. His MLB debut was a special one, as he hit a grand slam in his first career major league plate appearance against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was one of two players that the Cubs received from the San Francisco Giants in the Kris Bryant trade in 2021.
New York may have been the next worst option with the number of major league outfielders already locked on to the roster. His .306 average in the spring was not good enough to crack a roster spot and if he is released, he will likely begin to bounce around the league because of the fact that he cannot be optioned to the minor leagues at any point.
Canario has showcased his potential with both the Mets and Cubs, and it will be intriguing to see if he is able to find a landing spot with another team in the majors.
