The Philadelphia Phillies know they need to change things up this winter. But how drastically will they reshape the lineup?
In 2024, the Phillies had one of Major League Baseball’s best lineups… until they didn’t. In the first half, Philadelphia had three All-Star starters and the game’s best record, but by the postseason, the entire offense was Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos.
One of the players who tailed off the most in the second half was third baseman Alec Bohm, who has recently become the subject of heavy trade speculation. Bohm not only slumped heavily after making his first career All-Star team, but he’s had his attitude questioned by both pundits and nameless Phillies sources.
If the Phillies choose to move on from Bohm, the door will be open for President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski to go big-game hunting at third base. And there’s really only one big-name free-agent third baseman available for teams to chase this winter.
Recently, Jacob Hitz of FOX 43 predicted that the Phillies would land longtime Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, a two-time American League All-Star, on a six-year, $160 million contract.
“I didn’t think the Phillies would pull the trigger on a guy like Bregman, until rumors of putting Alec Bohm on the trade block surfaced this week,” Hitz said.
“Although Bohm had a career year, if his attitude is an issue for the front office, I wouldn’t want to keep him around either. Bregman is a great replacement, bringing in more power and some pretty solid defense in the hot corner for another World Series push.”
Bregman, 30, hasn’t quite been the same brand of superstar in recent years that he was in his 41-homer 2019 season, but he’s still a fantastic all-around player. In 2024, he slashed .260/.315/.463, which included a big second half, while winning his first career Gold Glove at third base.
The Phillies desperately want to win a World Series, and Bregman would give them another prominent player on their roster who’s done so, in addition to Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. That championship experience could prove invaluable come October of 2025.
