Fueling the Fire: Jared Verse’s Comments Come Back to Haunt Rams: Rookies’ Mistake Proves Costly
Sometimes, playoff games are decided by small details. Edge defender Jared Verse showed he is a franchise defender for the Los Angeles Rams, but that doesn’t mean he can’t improve as a leader.
Three days before the game, Verse had a questionable decision to criticize Philadelphia Eagles‘ fans.
“I hate Eagles fans. They’re so annoying. I hate Eagles fans,” Verse told the Los Angeles Times. “I didn’t even do nothing to ’em. It was my first time playing. Oh, I hate Eagles fans. When I see that green and white, I hate it. I actually get upset. Like I actually genuinely get hot.”
On Sunday, the Rams lost to the Eagles 28-22, ending their season in the divisional round. What Verse said wasn’t the reason for the elimination, but it’s an unnecessary way to give the opponent extra motivation.
Saquon Barkley, who was a divisional rival from the Eagles for several years, had an interesting point of view with a perception from both sides.
“Probably not the smartest thing to say when you’re coming to Philadelphia,” Barkley said. “I’ve been on the other side and even if I felt some type of way, I probably wouldn’t give them any extra fuel. I’m pretty sure Philly fans have seen that comment. It was already going to be loud and rocking, so it’s just only going to add to it.”
It was a rough game, with snow and several mistakes from both teams. Jared Verse had a great individual performance, and he individually has what it takes to back up what he said.
But as a rookie, Verse has a way to go. And part of that is understanding that the team goes beyond him. And giving the other team motivation is unnecessary and might affect other people.
The Rams couldn’t be happier with the selection of Jared Verse, and his rookie season is a great indication of what’s ahead. But that mistake is a lesson, and he will have to show he learned from it in 2025.
