The unexpected injury to Kyrie Irving could only make things worse for Nico Harrison, as his gamble has fallen flat.

Kyrie Irving suffered what looked to be a brutal injury during the Dallas Mavericks‘ 122-98 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Irving fought back tears as he took his two free-throws before leaving. There is no word on the extent of his injury, but the current outlook doesn’t look good.

This marks the latest in a string of brutal injuries to the Mavericks’ key players. Irving joins Jaden Hardy, Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, and P.J. Washington on the injury reserve.

With this many players unavailable, the Mavericks are in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs. But Irving’s injury could spell the end of his time in Dallas.

Kyrie Irving could be done with Mavericks

If Kyrie Irving’s injury turns out to be season-ending, the Mavericks might be in deep water. It is hard to envision the team making the playoffs without Irving available.

He is either their best or second-best player, depending on how highly you rate Anthony Davis. And given that the Mavericks currently sit 10th in the Western Conference with a 32-30 record.

But there is more to it than just that. If the Mavericks miss the playoffs, the March 3rd game against the Kings could be Irving’s last as a Maverick.

Kyrie Irving could become a free agent this summer if he turns down his player option. Many expect him to, as he could earn more money in free agency.

Given that the Mavs traded away Luka Doncic, someone Irving was very close to, he might choose to leave, not wanting to play without a teammate that he went to the NBA Finals with.

Even the arrival of Anthony Davis might not convince Kyrie Irving to stick around in Dallas. But if the All-Star does choose to leave, where could he go?

One former NBA star believes Irving could finally decide to go to the New York Knicks. However, given his deep ties to the Brooklyn Nets, even beyond his stint there, that might be unlikely.

Given that Kevin Durant is likely to be traded by the Suns this summer, perhaps a reunion between the two friends is possible on another team.

Nico Harrison gambled the franchise’s future in the hopes that Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis could win them a championship.

But if Irving leaves, his decision to trade Luka Doncic could be looked at as the worst by any front office member in NBA history.
