Jets’ Coaching Search Takes a Surprising Twist: Rex Ryan Expresses Interest in Return
Rex Ryan has entered the ring for the New York Jets’ search of a head coach during the 2025 NFL offseason.
Mostly because of his own accord to this point.
Earlier this week, Ryan appeared on ESPN Radio and was asked if he expects to talk to the team. The former Jets head coach said yes he does.
“I believe I will,” Ryan said.
Since that chat on Monday, there has yet to be a report revealing Ryan has a scheduled interview in New York. So far, only former Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has done so.
Ryan, 62, went 46-50 in six seasons as New York’s bench boss. He was previously employed by the Jets from 2009 to 2014 which included back-to-back trips to the AFC Championship game. That was the last time the team cracked the postseason.
After that, he spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills where he had a 15-16 record.
New York’s last head coach, Robert Saleh, was fired on Oct. 8. The team was 2-3 at the time, named Jeff Ulbrich the interim, and the Jets’ current record is 4-12.
After letting Saleh go, the Jets announced the The 33rd Team, a football media, analytics and consulting media outlet would assist team owner Woody Johnson in their search for a new general manager and head coach. That group was founded by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and ex-Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.
