Jets Loading Up on Passing Offense Firepower: Mock Draft Reveals Exciting Picks
As the New York Jets watch the playoffs from the couch, they have many major decisions quickly approaching. Anointing the next general manager and head coach will help reshape the organization with a new vision.
A rookie quarterback will eventually define the next era of New York football, although it’s not yet clear if veteran passer Aaron Rodgers will return for a third season in East Rutherford.
No matter who is starting in Week 1, the Jets won’t find success until it has a franchise quarterback with a strong supporting cast. As such, they pick major upgrades to the passing offense in this three-round mock draft.
Round 1, Pick 7: Arizona Receiver Tetairoa McMillan
If Rodgers is gone, it seems inevitable that receiver Davante Adams will follow suit, leaving a vacancy on the boundary. Garrett Wilson and a forgettable cast of sidekicks weren’t good enough for Zach Wilson, and it likely wouldn’t be enough for the next rookie passer.
That makes the class’ best receiver, McMillan, a legitimate possibility in Round 1.
With a 6-foot-5 frame and the movement skills of a smaller, slighter receiver, McMillan can impact every level of the field. He’s a threat after the catch and above the rim, making him a strong partner in crime for Wilson.
There’s nothing wrong with having a third quality receiver in the event Adams sticks around, too.
Round 2, Pick 38: Minnesota Offensive Tackle Aireontae Ersery
With two offensive tackles set to hit free agency and 2024 first-rounder Olu Fashanu set to man the blindside, New York needs another tackle.
It would be wise to pair a rookie with a competent veteran for additional depth and a failsafe if a rookie isn’t ready to start from the jump. Finding starting-level talent up front can be rare on Day 2, but Ersery profiles as a decent bet, even if some upside is left on the table.
He’s not the elite athlete others in this class claim to be, but as a proficient pass protector and strong fit in a zone-rushing scheme, there’s reason to believe the Jets would be taking a capable Moses replacement.
Finding a prospect at a high-value position without sacrificing talent is a nice way for the next general manager to introduce himself to the fanbase.
Round 3, Pick 92: Miami Tight End Elijah Arroyo
Tight end Tyler Conklin was adequate as a starter, but he’s set for free agency in March, opening the door for another body to be added to the room.
In a league with increasingly athletic tight ends doing damage in the slot, Arroyo fits right in. He’s a real threat up the seam with the athleticism and polished receiving chops to make an impact from the jump as a weapon.
However, upside isn’t free in Round 3. There are medical red flags, production question marks, and blocking woes that could stunt his transition to the league or relegate him to a role player rather than a full-time starter.
New York’s eventual offensive playcaller could go a long way in deciding whether Arroyo’s explosive game is the right fit. Adding upside to the passing offense, though, always warrants consideration.
