Arsenal star Mikel Merino started for Spain in their 3-0 win over Serbia in the Nations League.

The 29-year-old has had a torrid few months. He suffered an injury in his very first training session at Arsenal and was sidelined until very recently.

However, Merino is fit now and although he is yet to reach his peak fitness level, you can tell just how good a player he is.

Against Serbia on Tuesday night, Merino started in midfield and was very, very impressive.

The Spaniard got on the ball on plenty of occasions, was very tidy in possession and his first touch for a player of his size is just incredible. To add to that, Merino was absolutely amazing in the air.

Arsenal fans tuned in to watch Merino in action, and they were all impressed.

Merino only played 65 minutes for Spain against Serbia, but that was enough for Arsenal fans to be convinced that he’s going to be a star for them.

Many Gooners took to X to have their say on Merino after watching him, and there’s real excitement over what he can bring to this Arsenal side.

One Arsenal fan tweeted: “I watched the Spain game and was really impressed with Merino. The passes he was finding, he was so forward-looking. If he brings this form to Arsenal, Rice sits on the bench.”

Mikel Arteta was absolutely adamant that he wanted to sign Merino in the summer.

There were worries about the Spanish midfielder’s age and his previous underwhelming spell in England with Newcastle United, but the Arsenal manager had made up his mind.

Merino has had a difficult start to life in North London because of his injury, but his performances for Spain on Tuesday have convinced Arsenal fans that he is the right man.

What Arteta will love is that Merino won five of his eight attempted duels while maintaining a 100 per cent success rate in the air.

Arsenal take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, and we think Merino will get plenty of minutes in that game.
