Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Gabriel Martinelli after Tottenham win, Arteta has to listen

Arsenal were able to maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. 

Arsenal were able to claim the North London Derby bragging rights with this win.

In what was a frenetic and feisty encounter, only Mikel Arteta’s side were able to produce a telling final touch and find the back of the net.

The breakthrough came in the second half, as Gabriel Magalhaes met Bukayo Saka’s corner to head in from close range.

The goal capped off an immaculate performance from Gabriel, who alongside William Saliba, was a rock at the back.

However, the Gunners might have gone ahead against Spurs sooner had Gabriel Martinelli not squandered a golden first half opportunity.

Martinelli was criticised by former Arsenal defender Matt Upson for his wastefulness, as after being played through on goal by Leandro Trossard, the Brazilian failed to beat the goalkeeper with a tame effort.

Martinelli’s all-round performance was underwhelming, and he will need to do much more to establish himself as a nailed-on starter under Arteta going forward, especially with Raheem Sterling now also on the books at the Emirates Stadium.

Plenty of Arsenal supporters on X were quick to demand more from Martinelli after this match.

One said: “I’m genuinely done with him now, every time he has a chance to prove himself he fails spectacularly.”

Another stated: “Martinelli oh my god…. What have we done to deserve this from this guy… his decision making is so poor.”

One fan claimed: “He’s a bench warmer at best. It’s not a confidence thing anymore.”

Another more optimistic supporter added: “He’s got to work his way through it this year. I remain confident he will.”

Martinelli must be dropped for Manchester City clash

The current Arsenal injury crisis likely convinced Arteta to start Martinelli against Spurs.

However, when the Gunners come up against Manchester City next time out in the Premier League, Declan Rice will have returned from suspension, and Martin Odegaard may even be available again.

In any case, with Trossard in form, and Sterling now an option for Arteta, the Spanish coach has to recognise that Martinelli is struggling and take him out of the firing line.
