Arsenal announced this week that manager Mikel Arteta has signed a new three-year contract at the club, in a massive boost for the future.

Arteta had entered the final 12 months of his deal, and rumours linked him with Barcelona earlier this year.

However, Arsenal and Arteta agreed a new three-year contract, which will see the Spaniard become one of the highest-paid managers in the world.

He has helped turn Arsenal into a title-challenging team, after joining at a turbulent time for the club, and Arteta has the highest win rate out of any manager in the club’s history during the Premier League era.

There is now another bonus from his new deal, as it could help keep superstar defender William Saliba at the club in the long-term.

Reports have indicated that Real Madrid are keen on signing Saliba in the long-term, with the Frenchman now one of the best defenders in the world.

It is inevitable that interest will build in him, but Arsenal are hopeful that they can continue to keep the 23-year-old.

French expert Jonathan Johnson has now claimed that Arteta’s new contract, and the certainty that comes with it, could help Arsenal keep Saliba.

“He’s one of their top talents at the moment, and one of the best defenders in world football, and after a strong showing at the Euros he’s shown he’s in that world class bracket,” he stated of Saliba.

“I think now that Mikel Arteta’s future has also been cleared up, I think Saliba will be looked at as a player that the Gunners hope to keep as a key cornerstone for the team.

“For the moment, I can’t see anyone going in for Saliba while he remains such a key part of that Arsenal project, but, depending on what happens this season, who knows.”

Arsenal need to win major trophies to keep William Saliba

Saliba is on track to become the best centre-back in world football, and Arsenal truly have a gem on their hands.

However, Arsenal will need to show that they can not only challenge for major honours, but also win them.

Winning the Premier League or Champions League could definitely keep Saliba at the club, and whilst Arteta is at Arsenal, it seems unlikely that the defender will leave.

However, if Arsenal fail to win anything by the time Saliba’s contract heads towards its end, they may face a tough battle to convince him to stay if clubs such as Real Madrid come calling.
