Edu has highlighted the key signing Arsenal need next summer, and is it a striker?

Although Arsenal enjoyed a successful summer on the transfer front, there are still one or two obvious positions for Edu to improve moving forward.

There’s no doubt that Mikel Arteta can achieve a lot of success with this Arsenal squad as it is, but perhaps a new striker and a number six would take things one step further.

Ian Wright recently asked Arsenal fans to give Gabriel Jesus another chance, and he’s right in that regard.

But once the season is over and there’s adequate time to plan at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal should allow Jesus to move and buy a better-suited back up for Kai Havertz.

Similarly, there could be a big overhaul in midfield too, with both Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s contracts expiring in the summer.

That being said, when reflecting on England’s 3-1 win over Finland on Sunday evening, Alan Shearer perhaps pointed out Arsenal’s most crucial signing on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

Shearer was reflecting on just how much Angel Gomes’ introduction into England’s midfield helped Declan Rice, allowing the Arsenal man to bomb forward.

Perhaps 24-year-old Gomes, who is playing his football for Lille, wouldn’t be the right player for Arteta per say, but his profile of player would definitely improve Arsenal longer-term.

Shearer reiterated that Rice wasn’t a sitting midfielder, something Arteta has proved at Arsenal since reinventing the former West Ham captain as a number eight.

Shearer said: “Yeah I think what he also does as well, he allows sort of Declan to play more his game as well, because he’s not a sitting midfielder although he can do it.

“A big part of his game is getting forward and making those runs. You see that with his goal.

“So I think Angel Gomes, he has brought a lot to the team. I mean, the pass was incredible, which you need that when opposition are doing to sit deep, try and be tight and compact.”

Benjamin Sesko is still a priority signing for Arsenal

Of course, judging by his exploits this season, it would be a shame if Arsenal didn’t pursue another move for Benjamin Sesko next summer.

Sesko was honest about his reasoning for rejecting Arsenal this summer, but those words should perhaps encourage another move by the Gunners.

And in regard to Arsenal signing a player like Gomes to sit alongside Rice in midfield, it still appears as if Martin Zubimendi is the perfect signing.

Zubimendi perhaps has his eyes on a different move, but Arteta has already proven how convincing he can be to his compatriots when signing Mikel Merino.

Merino was left blown away by Arteta’s project, and perhaps the Arsenal boss can repeat that trick this summer.
