Arsenal suffered late heartbreak against Manchester City.

Arsenal were able to take a 2-1 lead into the break at the Etihad Stadium. However, Leandro Trossard’s red card on the stroke of half-time meant that Mikel Arteta had to adopt a far more defensive game plan for the second period.

Micah Richards praised Arsenal for their defensive effort, with David Raya impressing again as William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes both also caught the eye.

However, just after the seventh and final added on minute at the end of the match elapsed, the ball ricocheted to John Stones in the Arsenal box and the Manchester City man was able to find the back of the net.

Arteta will be proud of his side’s efforts, but will rue the fact that the Gunners were unable to return from the North West with three points in tow.

Pep Guardiola rages after Riccardo Calafiori goal

Riccardo Calafiori opened his Arsenal account in spectacular fashion with his long-range effort in the first half. However, Manchester City felt that the goal should not have stood, with Pep Guardiola aiming a “karate kick” at a chair in a rage.

The hosts alleged that the Gunners did not take the free kick that led to the goal from the correct position, and that Kyle Walker was not given time to prepare himself.

David Raya impressed for Arsenal again

Whilst he was unable to keep a clean sheet, the Spanish shot-stopper was still able to catch the eye.

Arsenal fans were bold in their praise for Raya after the match, with some claiming him to be the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

What is certain, though, is that Arteta’s decision to make Raya the Gunners’ No. 1 last season has now been wholly justified.

Whilst the goalkeeper impressed on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium, he has now given Arteta a cause for concern off it.

Raya was pictured sporting a bandage after the match. If he has picked up a knock, then summer loan arrival Neto could soon be in line for his Arsenal debut.

Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz join unwanted Premier League club

Arsenal had very little of the ball in second half, and when they did have it it proved impossible to keep for long with no outlets to aim for higher up the pitch.

Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz particularly struggled to retain possession, as the duo were both unable to complete a single pass throughout the entire match, an unfortunate feat not managed by a Premier League player since 2004.

However, both players still made important contributions to the team’s collective defensive effort.

Trossard was sent off for delaying the restart after Manchester City had been awarded a free kick. Both of his two yellow cards were awarded for separate instances of this offence.

In recent weeks, Declan Rice and Saliba have been punished for the same offence, too. This is becoming a bad habit that the Gunners need to stamp out.

Whilst Arteta complained about Trossard’s red card, the Spanish coach needs to make changes to his players’ behaviour in these scenarios.
