Gabriel Martinelli gives honest verdict on Mikel Arteta decision and reveals what he ‘wants’ at Arsenal
Gabriel Martinelli had to content himself with a starting spot on the bench when Arsenal welcomed Southampton to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta rotated his Arsenal team somewhat for the visit of newly-promoted Southampton.
In favour of Gabriel Martinelli, Raheem Sterling was given his first Premier League start for the North London club.
The Chelsea loanee produced an acceptable performance, and was clearly determined to make something positive happen. However, Martinelli had a huge impact after he replaced the 29-year-old with half an hour to go and the Gunners in need of a goal.
He had not been on the pitch ten minutes before he connected with a Bukayo Saka cross at the far post and prodded the ball home beyond Aaron Ramsdale. The fact that the Brazilian winger made such a run in first the place, and finished in such a controlled manner, provided yet another sign that Martinelli is getting back to his best.

The 23-year-old looks reenergised and ready to shine for the Gunners. Arsenal fans will be hoping that he maintains his recent progress on the other side of the international break.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian international has opened up about how he felt about being named amongst the substitutes this weekend.
Speaking to Football.London, he said: “Yeah I mean we have to understand the rotation. Really happy for Sterling who played there today. I was ready to come as well and really happy with the goal.”
However, he also made it clear that he is determined to be seen as the nailed-on starter in that left-wing role. He added: “I mean, no one wants to be on the bench. I want to play. I don’t mind being on the bench but I’m happy to help the team and be there for the boys as well.”
Arsenal patience rewarded by Martinelli
Martinelli should perhaps consider himself fortunate not to have been dropped to the bench earlier this season. In any case, for the clash against the Saints he was very much rested from the off, rather than dropped.
The point still stands, though, earlier this season Arsenal fans were calling for Martinelli to be cut from the regular starting XI.
Arteta’s faith in the forward has paid off, though, and he will now expect Martinelli to play a key role, and contribute significantly in terms of end product, for Arsenal throughout the rest of the season.
