Riccardo Calafiori had a moment of genius against Southampton that Arsenal fans might have missed

Arsenal full-back Riccardo Calafiori delivered another brilliant display in the 3-1 win over Southampton just before the upcoming international break.

Calafiori played in a familiar left back role for Arsenal, advancing into midfield when he saw fit at the Emirates Stadium.

It was something of a makeshift back line for the Gunners given that both Jurrien Timber and Ben White weren’t risked by Mikel Arteta.

Thomas Partey impressed at right-back and was joined by Arsenal’s familiar and formidable centre-back pairing.

Calafiori earned an 8.5/10 for his performance, another stellar display by the Italian.

However, one moment of genius by Calafiori during Arsenal’s second half comeback may have even been missed by fans in the stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli owes his Southampton goal to Riccardo Calafiori

Arteta used his subs extremely well in the second half on Saturday, bringing on all of Gabriel Martinelli, Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard to rescue three points.

Of course, Martinelli went on to put Arsenal 2-1 ahead courtesy of an outrageously good assist from Bukayo Saka.

Saka cut in from the right hand side in familiar fashion and delivered an excellent cross to the far post, one that Martinelli was on hand to finish calmly past Aaron Ramsdale.

A typical Martinelli run, a player who never stops working, but perhaps some of the assist should also go to Calafiori.

Just before the goal, cameras captured Calafiori catching Martinelli’s eye and telling him to make the run to the far post, which he duly obliged.

Of course, the reward was then a goal for the Brazilian, and a satisfying moment for Calafiori who clearly already understands Saka well enough.

Perhaps Calafiori might make the run for himself next time in search of his second goal in Arsenal colours.

Takehiro Tomiyasu finally back after Arsenal injury

On the subject of full-backs, Takehiro Tomiyasu returned to applause against Southampton, replacing Partey in the 84th minute.

Tomiyasu has barely played a role for Arteta this calendar year, explaining how much Arsenal’s strength in depth has improved.

If he can stay fit, there’s definitely still an argument to say that Tomiyasu could start week in, week out for Arsenal, even if new competition may stand in the way.

But once the festive calendar ramps up and Arsenal are playing in the FA Cup and Champions League regularly, the Japan international will be needed.

An incredibly resolute defender, and now a luxury option for Arteta.
