Spain’s media make serious claim about Arsenal’s David Raya after excellent display vs Denmark

Raya has enjoyed an incredible start to the season for Arsenal – producing more than one save for his end of career highlight reel.

And at 29-years-old, Raya has joined the conversation of being among the best goalkeepers in the world.

Luis de la Fuente is very loyal to Simon, the goalkeeper he trusted for the Euros, but Raya is now doing everything he can to change the situation.

That being said, after Raya’s ‘impeccable’ display against Denmark, some part of Spain’s media believe that the Arsenal man could be about to force De la Fuente’s hand.

Arsenal star David Raya could be on the cusp of becoming Spain number one

For Arsenal fans wondering, Mikel Merino did appear in the 1-0 win as a second half sub for Pedri, entering the game in the 62nd minute.

However, it was Raya’s night from an Arsenal perspective, a performance that was celebrated in Spanish media after the game.

First of all, handing Raya a 7/10 rating, Sport wrote: “He has earned a place in the starting eleven due to Unai’s injury, but he exudes enormous confidence.

“He is a reliable player with his feet and is brave and daring when he comes out.”

Marca then provided a more comprehensive review of Raya’s game after declaring that he was ‘fighting’ for Simon’s position.

Scoring Raya 8/10, they shared: “The Spanish goalkeeper came out confidently to make a good save from Denmark’s first chance in the opening minutes of the match.

“He didn’t have many problems in the first half hour of the match thanks to Spain having control of the game.

“After the half hour he put in a spectacular performance to prevent Denmark from scoring.

“He came out forcefully and without hesitation to prevent Dolberg from finishing.

“Raya was impeccable and was safe between the sticks throughout the match.

“Great game from the Spanish goalkeeper. He was shown a yellow card in the 94th minute for wasting time.”

Raya endured a nervous start in north London

Simon is expected to be out with his wrist injury until the end of the year, meaning Raya will also start against Serbia on Tuesday and then for two more Nations League games in November.

An exciting opportunity for Raya, who definitely couldn’t be doing much more to prove his credentials.

Interestingly, David Seaman thought Raya looked different at Arsenal this season, concluding that the goalkeeper had his confidence back after a tough tussle with Aaron Ramsdale.

Whilst replacing the England international, Raya did suffer one or two hiccups, moments that haven’t been typical of his game since.

And without that added pressure, Raya is now thriving for club and country.
