Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart are sounding the alarm on the New York Knicks’ struggles against the very best teams in the NBA.

The New York Knicks have the fifth best record in the NBA and currently occupy the No. 3 seed in the East. After a big summer where they added Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, the Knicks are in the middle of a win-now timeline.

Jalen Brunson and Towns are All-NBA caliber players, while Bridges and OG Anunoby are former All-Defense selections. Josh Hart is the perfect connecting piece between their talents. The Knicks have bet big on this core to go all the way to winning a title.

Unfortunately, not many believe the Knicks are real contenders. Brian Windhorst has previously called the Knicks pretenders. The ESPN analyst also laid out why the New York-based franchise won’t make a playoff impact.

This has reflected on the court, as the Knicks haven’t beaten teams like the Celtics, Cavaliers, Thunder, and Grizzlies this season. These poor performances have become a major concerns for Knicks’ podcasting duo Brunson and Hart.

Brunson and Hart get real on Knicks struggles against the NBA’s elite

The Knicks are 0-7 against the four teams ahead of them in the NBA standings right now. Their record in major games prompted Kendrick Perkins to suggest that Brunson and Hart shut their podcast for the rest of the season.

Instead of doing that, Brunson and Hart honestly discussed the Knicks poor performances against the best teams in the latest episode of ‘The Roommates Show.’

Jalen Brunson: “Might as well jump out the gate with this. Our record against the top teams in the NBA pretty horse___.”

Josh Hart: “What are, 0-7? For a team to see that stat and to recognize it, I think it could be taken two ways. It can be extremely beneficial because it could put you in a position of being humbled. Realizing like we have a lot of room to go, if you want to compete with these guys and this team. Or, it could kind of break teams and you think like, ‘Oh, we’re not as good as these teams.’ I think with the mentality and the character of the team that we have, I think it would be the first one.”

“I’m not panicking about the stat because I think it will open our eyes to realizing we have to get to another level individually and another team.”

Jalen Brunson: “The frustrating part about all this is that we have what it takes. We have the personnel, like we have everything we need in that locker room. We just gotta put together.”

“The amount of times we’ve been like embarrassed on national television, I mean that should, that should ring a bell. Like that should be like a wake up call in itself and not just for those games, just like for the rest of the season. Like we gotta, we gotta wake the hell up.”

New York Knicks can prove their worth in their next five games

There is point in looking back. The Knicks have to move forward and look to build on their impressive 38-20 record this season. While the franchise has struggled against the top teams, they’re just 3.5 games behind the Boston Celtics. So, it isn’t impossible to imagine they can make a push for the No. 2 seed in the East.

If they intend on doing that, the Knicks have to maximize a tricky upcoming five-game stretch against Playoff-caliber opponents. They face the Memphis Grizzlies tonight and hope to secure their first win against a team ranked higher than them.

They’ll follow that up with facing both sides of the Jimmy Butler trade. They will face the Miami Heat on the road on March 2 before facing the Golden State Warriors at home on March 4. Meanwhile, they’ll prepare for a tricky road back-to-back in Los Angeles against the Lakers and Clippers on March 6 and 7.

Karl-Anthony Towns missed the Knicks last game against the Philadelphia 76ers with a knee injury. However, he hopes to return for their game against the Grizzlies. All five of their upcoming opponents have Playoff hopes. Particularly, the Warriors and Lakers have been in great form.

Winning these high-profile games will be crucial for the Knicks. Unfortunately, it will be a major task to execute. But if they can’t win these games, they’ll struggle to break narratives around them being pretenders.
