Lions’ Offense to Become NFL’s Most Fearsome Unit: Another Former NFL Player to Join Lions’ Coaching Staff
Ben Johnson has started building a stellar first staff with the Chicago Bears and more hires are still to come at key positions.
Johnson has already created a solid mix of coaches with a high level of experience and young, hungry coaches on his staff in Chicago and when it comes to the positional assistants, he clearly has a particular type he’s looking for.
Outside of the three coordinator hires, the other confirmed coaches on the staff are all former NFL players in Antwaan Randle El, Al Harris, and J.T. Barrett. And now another former player might be joining the list with prior connections to Johnson.
According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, the Bears have requested to interview Washington Commanders’ assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough for the team’s vacant passing game coordinator position.
But, the Bears aren’t the only ones interested in the rising coaching candidate. The New York Jets, led by former Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, are also looking to interview Blough for their vacant quarterbacks coach position on Glenn’s first coaching staff.
Blough spent three seasons as a quarterback for the Lions from 2019-2021 and overlapped with Glenn during his final season. In 2022, Johnson was hired onto the Lions’ staff as an offensive coordinator, but he did not directly overlap with Blough.
Even though Blough didn’t play directly for Johnson, he did play for Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell in 2021, who seems to have given Johnson some pointers on who to look for as potential assistant coaches.
Earlier this morning, our Lions’ writer Mike Payton also linked Blough to the Lions’ vacant pass game coordinator role. The Bears’ offer and a potential Lions’ offer seem like the logical best next step for the Commanders’ assistant. We’ll see which team is able to to land him when it’s all said and done.
As for the run game coordinator on the Bears’ staff, expect that role to be handled by the potential new offensive line coach based on the names already linked to the staff.
