Mahomes is About to Get the Ultimate Weapon: Chiefs Set to Pair QB with 1,900-Yard WR
The Kansas City Chiefs are usually known for their high-powered offense led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but in 2024, that wasn’t the case after they ranked only 17th in total yards per game (327.6) and 15th in points per game (22.6).
One glaring hole that could be addressed is the receiving group after Xavier Worthy, who had 59 receptions, 638 yards, and six touchdowns, led the Chiefs’ wide receivers in all three categories.
It’s a problem they could address in the 2025 NFL Draft, with a mock draft done by Nate Tice and Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports predicting Kansas City will select wide receiver Matthew Golden with the No. 31 pick.
“Offensive line is very much in play here, and there are some interesting names the Chiefs could look at,” they wrote. “They instead dip their pen back into the Longhorn ink and take another Texas wide receiver in Matthew Golden. Golden is a smooth athlete that can win against press. He would give Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense yet another weapon to open things up, beat man coverage, and hold the fort until Rashee Rice returns from injury.”
Between his two years with Houston (2022 and 2023) and sole season with Texas (2024), Golden has put up substantial numbers, accumulating 134 receptions, 1,975 yards and 22 touchdowns.
There’s no doubt he’s also getting ready to enter the NFL after his best collegiate season, during which he set single-season career highs in receptions (58), yards (987), and touchdowns (9).
The Chiefs are also thin at wide receiver after losing multiple in free agency, including DeAndre Hopkins to the Baltimore Ravens (one-year, $5 million), Justin Watson to the Houston Texans, and Mecole Hardman to the Green Bay Packers.
With the tight end Travis Kelce’s numbers starting to decline and no other receivers having yet taken a big step up, bringing in a new weapon for Mahomes could be very beneficial.
