Market Shift: Red Sox’s Offseason Plans Affected by Rising Free Agent Costs
After a disappointing 2024 season, the Boston Red Sox have a lot of work to do to become contenders for both the postseason and the World Series in the near future.
As Boston looks for ways to improve their roster, one name that’s popped up quite a few times is Houston Astros free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
The 30-year-old has made two All-Stars and won two World Series during his time with Houston. Last season, he hit .260 with a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs and three stolen bases in 145 games. He also won his first Gold Glove.
The Red Sox have been linked to Bregman in rumors, but considering what it may cost to bring him in, they may be out on the idea.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal believes Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, may be looking for a deal closer to Manny Machado’s 11-year, $350 million extension with the San Diego Padres.
Boston already has Rafael Devers manning third base, and both first base and designated hitter, the other positions that either Bregman or Devers could relocate to, are also spoken for.
The combination of Bregman’s production dropping off in recent years and the cost, could be enough to scare the Red Sox away.
