Mega-Deal: Mets’ Trade Offer Brings High-Priced Ace to New York in 5-Player Swap
The New York Mets could be aggressive this winter after falling just short of the World Series in 2024. The starting rotation could be a focus of the team this winter.
FanSided’s Josue de Jesus proposed this trade that brings Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet to New York:
- Mets receive: left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet
- White Sox receive: shortstop/outfielder Jett Williams, outfielder/first baseman Ryan Clifford, catcher Kevin Parada and right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell
“In contractual and control terms, Crochet would not be a free agent until after the 2026 season and is projected to earn a salary of $2.9 million in 2025 via arbitration,” wrote de Jesus. “For their part, the Mets would have to begin any negotiations for Crochet with their best position prospect Jett Williams.”
Williams is the Mets’ No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. 2024 was Crochet’s first year as a starter and he was named an All-Star. He had a 3.58 ERA. Spotrac projects him to sign a six-year, $130 million deal when he hits the open market. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale revealed that the White Sox plan to move Crochet this winter.
“No already-employed player was sought after more at these GM meetings than Chicago White Sox starter Garrett Crochet, who struck out 209 batters in 146 innings and earned only $800,000 last season,” wrote Nightengale.
The Mets could lose Sean Manaea in free agency and Crochet would be an upgrade, to say the least. His contract should not interfere in the Mets pursuit of Juan Soto like other free agents would. Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell and Max Fried would immediately make it harder for the Mets to sign Soto.
