FanSided’s Christopher Kline has suggested that the Mets should consider signing Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Carlos Estévez.
“Carlos Estevez is among the best free agents left. The 32-year-old, a former All-Star, finished last season with a 2.45 ERA and 0.91 WHIP,” wrote Kline. “Splitting the campaign between the Angels and Phillies, Estevez was Philadelphia’s prized trade deadline addition. The all-important Jose Alvarado upgrade. He finished with 26 saves in 54 appearances, netting 50 strikeouts.”
Estévez’s credentials are impressive. He was an All-Star in 2023, posting a 3.90 ERA with 31 saves. This season, he further honed his performance, lowering his ERA to 2.45 and adding six saves in just 20 games with the Phillies.
However, with his free-agent status, the Phillies might not be eager to re-sign him. Spotrac projects Estévez to land a three-year, $42 million deal this winter.
Despite his solid regular season performance, Estévez faced challenges in the postseason. He recorded a 3.38 ERA and was notably responsible for a grand slam to Francisco Lindor during the National League Division Series. Yet, one rough patch in October shouldn’t significantly impact his market value.
If signed by the Mets, Estévez could serve effectively as a setup man or potentially share closing duties with Edwin Díaz, providing the team with a dynamic back-end bullpen strategy.
Adding Estévez would not only bolster the Mets’ bullpen but also send a clear message about their intentions for the upcoming season.
The Mets, with a history of aggressive spending in the free agent market, are looking to reclaim their competitive edge after a few lackluster seasons.
