With the New York Mets’ payroll being as high as it is, the team has every reason in the world to go out and make a move at the deadline to try to get closer to winning a World Series.
Although the Mets have dealt with multiple injuries on the mound, there are other areas of need, specifically in the outfield.
In a recent prediction, it was stated that the Mets will pursue Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles, who insiders have now suggested will be available at the deadline.
“The New York Mets will be looking for ways to add at the trade deadline in July.
“Most of the attention will be directed toward addressing pitching, specifically the rotation. However, centerfield is an area where the Mets should be looking for a possible upgrade. Owner Steve Cohen has shown on multiple occasions that money isn’t an issue for him, and he will pay the luxury tax imposed by the league.
“With that mentality, the Mets should pursue Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles,” Drew VonScio of Newsweek wrote.
Mullins has been on a brutal stretch in recent games, but was playing like one of the better players in Major League Baseball before that.
However, he has just five hits in his last nine games, dropping his batting average from .279 to .237.
Still, for the year, he’s been excellent, posting a 137 OPS+ with seven home runs, five doubles, 21 RBI, and five stolen bases.
The Greensboro, North Carolina native is set to hit free agency at the end of the year, but the Mets have proven time and time again that they’re willing to hand out big deals, making it possible to keep him around
