MLB NEWS: New York Yankees Land Cy Young Winner Sandy Alcantara in Jaw-Dropping Blockbuster Trade
The New York Yankees are in urgent need of adding a starting pitcher this season, as they’re starting the year without three of their regulars (Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, and Gerrit Cole). While the Yankees have been linked to several potential trade targets, no significant progress has been made on any deals yet. Despite that, it seems likely that the Yankees will strike a trade to bolster their rotation.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted that New York could make a huge splash by acquiring Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara in a major four-player trade. According to Rymer, the Yankees would send RHP Will Warren, outfielder Spencer Jones (their No. 2 prospect), and shortstop George Lombard Jr. (their No. 4 prospect) to the Marlins in exchange for Alcántara.
Rymer pointed out that with Gerrit Cole sidelined for the season and Luis Gil potentially out until June, a trade for a top-tier pitcher like Alcántara may be New York’s only shot at salvaging their season. Rymer further suggested that, unless the Padres are willing to trade Dylan Cease, Alcántara may be the Yankees’ most realistic option.

Despite undergoing Tommy John surgery, Alcántara has been in excellent form, posting 12.1 scoreless innings this spring. His contract is locked in through 2026 with a $21 million club option for 2027, adding further appeal for the Yankees. Although this trade would require parting with some valuable young players, the acquisition of Alcántara could be the boost the Yankees need.
However, there’s a significant downside. Trading Will Warren for Alcántara would certainly improve the Yankees’ pitching staff, but it wouldn’t address their overall rotation depth issue. New York would still rely on Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco as key starters.
A possible workaround could involve sending left-handed pitching prospect Brock Selvidge to Miami instead of Warren, which could help the Yankees preserve more of their prospect depth. For the Marlins, this package could be enticing enough to part with Alcántara, though they might also request an additional high-risk, high-reward prospect to sweeten the deal.
