Myers Gets His Due: Maple Leafs Reward Defenseman with Two-year, $1.7 Million Extension
On Friday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have signed defenseman Philippe Myers to a two-year contract extension. The deal, set to kick in next season, will carry an AAV of $850,000 through the 2026-27 season.
This is the first multi-year contract Myers has signed since his three-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers expired in 2023 when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 27-year-old is on a one-year deal that he signed with the Maple Leafs back in July, which has a cap hit of $775,000.
Myers didn’t make his debut with Toronto on Oct. 26 against the Boston Bruins, but ended up being a healthy scratch for the next few weeks. That led to the Leafs sending him down to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, for a conditioning stint. He ended up playing three games before being recalled.
Since then, Myers has appeared in 10 contests with the big club, including four of their past five games. In his short tenure with the Leafs, the Moncton, New Brunswick native has posted two assists, registering a plus/minus of +1 while averaging 17:08 of ice time. He last posted a point in the Leafs’ 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 27.
Myers came to The Six after spending the last two years with the Lightning organization, which followed three years splitting time between the Flyers and their primary affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
In 169 NHL appearances, Myers has scored eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points, including four points in 16 games with the Flyers during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Maple Leafs (24-13-2) sit first in the Atlantic Division, two points ahead of the Florida Panthers. Toronto is set to host the Bruins on Saturday night.
