New Identity: Knicks Embracing Fresh Style Under Tom Thibodeau’s Guidance
The New York Knicks look like a completely new team than in past seasons.
And it’s one of the oddest things in basketball this season.
Head coach Tom Thibodeau joined New York just five seasons ago but instilled a level of toughness and defensive dominance that had been lost by the organization for years.
Now, following the trades of Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, New York has not only ignored their defensive roots but has turned into an offensive juggernaut so far in the 2024-25 season.
“Guys are getting into a good rhythm, chemistry is good,” Thibodeau said after Monday’s win over the Washington Wizards. “When you play like that [with a lot of movement], the ball breathes and there’s a good energy to it. I thought the unselfishness was terrific.”
Unselfish play has certainly become a calling card for Thibodeau’s teams in New York. What hasn’t is their defensive struggles, though.
Holding Washington to 106 points seems fine, but New York is still ranked 21st in defensive efficiency. Sure, they have allowed the 11th fewest points per game in the league, but it’s clear the unit is still finding ways to work together on the defensive side of the ball.
And it’s incredulous when considering Thibodeau’s entire mantra is focused on the defensive side of the ball.
Chemistry takes time, and it’s great that their offense appears to be picking up their play after a 37-assist night on Monday. But if the Knicks want to be a championship contender, improving on the defensive side is next on their list.
