The Philadelphia Eagles have another big hole to fill this offseason after losing swing tackle Fred Johnson to NFL free agency on Wednesday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Johnson agreed to a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Jaguars are signing former Eagles offensive tackle Fred Johnson to a one-year deal, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus,” Schefter wrote on X.

It will be a happy homecoming for Johnson, who is originally from Florida and played college football for the Florida Gators.

Johnson, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 as an undrafted free agent, also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before signing with the Eagles in 2022.

Johnson saw action in all 17 games with six starts. He did a solid job stepping in at right tackle for Lane Johnson and left tackle for Jordan Mailata throughout the 2024 season.

How Do the Eagles Fill the Swing Tackle Void?

The Eagles’ only options right now to replace Johnson’s production at swing tackle are Darian Kinnard or Leakin Vakalahi.

Kinnard, 25, was originally selected out of Kentucky by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and joined the Eagles’ squad last spring.

He made just one regular season appearance as a rookie, playing six snaps on special teams snaps. Unfortunately, Kinnard didn’t play a major role in either of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl runs, nor did he do much for the Birds en route to Super Bowl LIX, but he is still a three-time Super Bowl champion. And he has plenty of experience learning from some of the best of the best in the league.

As for Vakalahi, he signed with the team last May from Australia after never playing football before. The 22-year-old athletic big man (6’5″, 318-pound) has been compared to fellow Aussie, Jordan Mailata. Vakalahi has yet to see any regular-season NFL action but this could be his moment.

The Eagles could also turn to the upcoming NFL draft, but then again, knowing what kind of man Jeff Stoutland is, he already has an entire plan up his sleeve.
