Packers Avoid Disaster: Last-Minute Twist Keeps Key Piece in Place
Jon-Eric Sullivan is staying around. The Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel was a finalist for the Jacksonville Jaguars general manager job , but it ultimately went to Los Angeles Rams director of scouting James Gladstone. Now, all general manager positions in the NFL have been filled.
Sullivan has been in his current position since 2022. He is the second highest person on the Packers scouting department, right after general manager Brian Gutekunst. The Packers also have Russ Ball as the executive vice president/director of football operations, as he is the main responsible for managing the salary cap.
Sullivan started in the NFL with an internship with the Packers in 2003, and it changed his life. He had different scouting roles from 2004 to 2015, when his career really started to take off. In 2016, he was promoted to director of college scouting by former general manager Ted Thompson.
When Brian Gutekunst took over in 2018 and Eliot Wolf left the team, Jon-Eric Sullivan became the second executive in the hierarchy of the scouting department, being promoted to co-director of player personnel — and his status was solidified in 2022, when he was named the vice president of player personnel.
Sullivan is a key part of the Packers’ front office. It seems like it’s a matter of when, not if he will eventually become an NFL general manager.
After him, the scouting department has director of player personnel John Wojciechowski, director of football operations Milt Hendrickson, director of college scouting Matt Malaspina, assistant director of college scouting Patrick Moore, director of pro personnel Richmond Williams, and national scout Sam Seale.
Multiple interviews
Even though Jon-Eric Sullivan didn’t get a GM job, he had several interviews around the league and put himself in position to land a job next year. He had talks with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans , and Jacksonville Jaguars. Sullivan was a finalist for both the Titans and Jaguars jobs, a process that included an in-person interview in Jacksonville.
