Packers Plans for Jaire Alexander Hits a Roadblock: Uncertainty Surrounds Star CB’s Future with The Team
It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Jaire Alexander will play for the Green Bay Packers in 2025. The cornerback is slated to make $17.5 million, and the team is exploring the options to trade him. However, the big salary and a concerning track record of injuries make it a complicated combination for potential buyers.
So far, the Packers haven’t been able to pull the trigger. But without a deadline to make a move before the regular season, general manager Brian Gutekunst is still waiting.
According to ESPN‘s Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky, Green Bay remains patient for now looking for a trade partner.
“While Alexander remains on the roster, the Packers are still trying to trade him, according to team sources and a source close to the player. They could wait indefinitely but most likely would prefer to get something done before next month’s draft. One source said the team has not approached Alexander about taking a pay cut and that even if it did, he would not be willing to do so. Without a trading partner, the Packers would likely release him, but there is no urgency to do so because he has no guaranteed money left on his deal until the start of the regular season, when he’s due $17.5 million.”
The Packers still have Jaire Alexander under contract for two years. But with a challenging cap situation projected for 2026 and the recent decision to sign cornerback Nate Hobbs in free agency, it’s extremely unlikely that the team would want to keep Jaire.
The cornerback wouldn’t accept a paycut, and that’s tough for the Packers for two reasons. One, it’s hard to find an outcome where keeping him makes sense. Two, other teams will also be skeptical with the current deal.
If Alexander is released from his deal, he would hit free agency and would be free to sign a new contract with any team—including NFC North rivals. And a new deal would probably include incentives based on playing time.
The cornerback has two more years on his current deal, slated to make $17.5 million in 2025 and $19.5 million in 2026.
If the Packers cut or trade Jaire before June 1st, they will have $18.117 million in dead money, but will clear up $6.876 million in cap space this year, plus $27.376 million in 2026 and $2.364 million in 2027 (void year).
There isn’t any type of roster bonus or guarantee kicking in until Week 1. Therefore, keeping or moving on from Alexander now doesn’t make any financial different for the Packers. For now, the waiting game continues.
