Pete Carroll Swept Up in Coaching Swoop: Raiders Face Surprise Competition from NFC Contender
The Las Vegas Raiders still need to find their head coach, but now it could be a bit easier with their GM search being done. This week, the Raiders hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek, who has known Tom Brady since the two were in college at Michigan.
Now, the two of them can collaborate on the head coach hire, which needs to be done sooner rather than later. At first, the Raiders could somewhat take their time with this decision, given that their top choice, Pete Carroll, a former Super Bowl winner with the Seattle Seahawks, had only two teams interested in him. That’s the Raiders of course, and the Chicago Bears, who just hired Ben Johnson instead.
So, why rush when they could take their time being the only team interested? They need to make sure they get this one right, so there shouldn’t be any rush.
Well, now they have a reason to be in a rush, kind of.
On Thursday, news broke that the Las Vegas Raiders do have some competition for Pete Carroll, who seems to be the leader in the Raiders’ clubhouse at this current juncture.
According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Carroll, who is waiting to hear from the Raiders about whether he has landed the job, recently spoke on the phone to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about the team’s head coach vacancy.
Now, that doesn’t mean they will get him or that the Raiders won’t get him, but it does mean that the Cowboys are probably interested in Carroll. He would also fit what they are looking for.
However, the good news is that the Cowboys are rumored to be very interested in hiring Brian Schottenheimer. If the Raiders did want to go the Carroll route, that would be the best-case scenario. However, the offseason has already been crazy, so no one really knows what to expect right now.
