Roster Cuts Rock White Sox Camp! Several Notable Players Sent Packing
The Chicago White Sox announced they have limited their Spring Training roster to 61 players, including 30 pitchers and 31 position players.
The team optioned right-hander Juan Carela to Double-A Birmingham. He posted a 3.71 ERA over 23 games and 106.2 innings pitched between High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham last year. However, with the announcement that he needs Tommy John Surgery coming soon after his demotion, he will be out for a while.
In addition, the Sox reassigned Jacob Gonzalez (SS), Adam Hackenberg (C), Wilfred Veras (OF), and notably, Braden Montgomery (OF), to minor-league camp. Montgomery was a key piece in the White Sox return for Garrett Crochet and ranks as the 54th prospect in Major League Baseball. The young switch-hitter is not expected to break into the big leagues for a couple of years, having just been drafted in 2024, but he has plenty of potential.

The White Sox will continue to trim down their roster, as they get set for Opening Day at the end of the month. Given Carela’s quick progression through the minor-league system, fans will be worried about how he bounces back from his surgery.
