Rumors Swirl: Mets Connected to 2023 Cy Award Winner
The New York Mets are expected to be very active in free agency this winter. They’ll have money to spend and spots to fill on the roster.
After losing the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers, two of their top starting pitchers, Sean Manaea and Luis Severino are free agents, and they’ll need to fill some holes in the rotation.
While they may not be the overwhelming favorites to sign him, left-hander Blake Snell is available, and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com believes the Mets could be a fit.
“The Mets are considered co-favorites to sign Soto, which would obviously have a sizable impact on their payroll. But New York could face the loss of starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Luis Severino, each of whom was extended a qualifying offer on Monday,” Feinsand wrote.
Snell got off to a dreadful start in 2024 after signing a two-year, $62 million pact with the San Francisco Giants. He had an ERA close to 10 in the first half and even landed on the injured list twice.
However, he turned things around in the second half and ended up finishing 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in his 20 starts, pitching well enough to be able to exercise his opt-out clause.
He’ll be expensive, but the Mets should be able to afford him, and having him next to Kodai Senga would give them a truly scary rotation.
