Deadlines create action.
Having done nothing newsworthy for days, the Guardians made a number of moves last night, as it was the deadline to protect players from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft.
Aleman and Nikhazy were expected by many. I don’t think anybody expected a Valera DFA anywhere near this soon.
At a time when many fans are asking the team to pursue Anthony Santander, the Guardians have let go of another highly-regarded injured corner outfield prospect. Valera may actually be more highly-regarded than Santander was when the Orioles plucked him from Cleveland for nothing while he was injured.
Hopefully Valera clears waivers and sticks around, but I wouldn’t bet on either happening. Somebody in the organization seems to really not believe in him.
Also getting protected yesterday was Deyvison De Los Santos, by the Marlins.
The Rays also lost a pair of humans… Jose Siri was traded to the Mets, and Bobby Kinne was hired by the Guardians to be their “director of baseball operations.”
