Santa Reid’s Magic Continue to Work Wonders in Kansas City: Chiefs Eye Another Super Bowl Title
The Kansas City Chiefs are the team that keeps on winning, and the gift that keeps on giving.
On Christmas Day they turned what many thought would be a tricky road game against desperate division leader into merely a speed bump. Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdowns and a defense playing without Chris Jones recorded five sacks in a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While other teams will jockey for playoff position and do the convoluted “If …” scenarios involving other teams’ results, the Chiefs could have as much as 24 days off until they play another meaningless game – in the AFC Divisional Round.
They won three games in 11 days. They just blew out two playoff teams in 96 hours. And they are just the third team since 1960 to go six consecutive games without a turnover.
They are 15-1 and have secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, which means they have the inside track to winning an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl.
So many reasons to be joyous this holiday season. Coach Andy Reid was so happy after Wednesday’s win that he donned a Santa suit and surprised his team in the locker room.
“How ’bout those Chiefs?!” Reid shouted, mimicking Jimmy Johnson’s iconic phrase after the Dallas Cowboys beat the San Francisco 49ers in the 1992 NFC Championship Game. “That’s what I’m talking about. Merry Christmas everybody, proud of you. For the present, you get home field advantage.”
Joked Mahomes about Reid’s jolly look, “He fits the role perfectly. He’s getting kind of skinny though. He’ll be a skinny Santa from now on.”
