The San Diego Padres were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. As they look to make a World Series run in 2025, they could lose one of their leverage relievers.
While listing relief pitchers the New Yankees could target, FanSided’s Jacob Mountz noted that Tanner Scott could be a target for the Yankees. The Padres added Scott before the deadline last season and would be losing an important piece if he were to leave.
“Scott’s ERA ballooned after being traded from the Marlins to the Padres, but he still kept it low pitching to a 2.73 ERA in San Diego. He primarily throws a heater that averages 97 mph and a slider in the high 80s,” wrote Mountz. “Scott is seen as one of the most sought-after bullpen arms on the market this offseason. With that said, he won’t come cheap.”
Scott had a 1.75 ERA for the season. He picked up four saves for the Padres in 28 games. Spotrac projects him to sign a four-year, $65 million deal in free agency. The Padres could definitely keep him around, but Scott will have plenty of suitors. The Yankees could use Scott as their primary closer if they lose Clay Holmes.
Scott was an All-Star in 2024. He had 22 saves split between the Miami Marlins and the Padres. In 72 innings he struck out 84 batters. His strikeouts were down from his past two seasons. However, his 72 innings were the second most he’s thrown in a season since his first full season in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles.
