The New York Yankees hoped for a better season from Alex Verdugo when they acquired him last offseason from the Boston Red Sox.
Unfortunately, they didn’t get much of what they were looking for from the left side of the plate, and Verdugo is now available on the market as he hits free agency for the first time in his career.
As the Yankees are expected to move on from the 28-year-old, there are some teams who might be looking for a short-term option in left field.
In trying to find a match for each team in free agency, Jim Bowden of The Athletic paired Verdugo with the Chicago White Sox — a team that just finished with the worst record in the modern baseball era.
Bowden projects Verdugo could sign a two-year deal worth $26 million.
It was a massive struggle for Verdugo during his lone season with the Yankees. He recorded a career-low .291 on-base percentage, .253 batting average on balls in play and 83 OPS+ (17 percent below league average).
Meanwhile, his 87.7 average exit velocity was the second-lowest mark of his career since becoming a regular player in MLB.
The Yankees are likely moving forward with young phenom Jasson Dominguez in left field so it will be interesting to see where he lands in free agency.
