Stunning Twist in Bregman Sweepstakes: NL Central Team Emerges as Surprise Landing Spot for Star Third Baseman
The Chicago Cubs’ busy offseason could get another boost.
According to Bruce Levine from 670 The Score, the Cubs have had “casual discussions” regarding third baseman Alex Bregman. Levine added that the Cubs are not interested in a long-term deal with Bregman, with a contract similar to the one Cody Bellinger signed during the 2023-24 offseason as the framework – a three-year deal with an opt-out after each season.
Such a deal would mark a drastic shift in Bregman’s asking price. He was believed to be looking for a six-year deal worth at least $200 million, having rejected the Astros’ six-year, $156 million offer.
In an ironic twist, the Astros may have replaced Bregman in a trade with the Cubs earlier in the offseason. Infielder Isaac Paredes and minor league third baseman Cam Smith were part of the return in the deal that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago.
Third base was a black hole for the Cubs in 2024 as eight players saw time at the hot corner. Cubs’ third basemen combined to produce a mediocre .204/.288/.335 batting line, hitting 29 home runs. Their -0.7 fWAR ranked 27th in the majors, leaving third base as a distinct area of need.
Bregman would provide a drastic upgrade at third. He shook off a slow start to post a .260/.315/.453 batting line in his 634 plate appearances, hitting 26 homers and 30 doubles. Bregman won his first Gold Glove award, leading American League third basemen with 12 runs saved. Adding Bregman would be a boost for a team with an eye toward a playoff run.
Bregman’s market has not materialized as expected. A short term deal with the Cubs could be the best option for both parties.
