This season has been a major disappointment for the Phoenix Suns thus far.
Phoenix was expected to challenge near the top of the Western Conference standings this season due to their superstar trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Instead, they currently find themselves sitting 11th in the West standings with a 26-28 record, which has them on the outside of the playoff picture.
Of course, Phoenix finished sixth in the West standings last season, which was the first season that their big three played together. With their star trio dealing with injuries, many believed that they would be improved this season, but that has not been the case.
Durant and Booker have had great seasons, but Beal has struggled. That led to head coach Mike Budenholzer moving him out of the starting lineup. Beal has thrived in his new role off the bench, but unfortunately for Phoenix, it has not made them a better team.
With the Suns continuing to struggle, Kevin Garnett recently gave his thoughts on his podcast KG Certified about what Phoenix needs to do.
“I think Phoenix needs a makeover,” Garnett said. “I think their experiment is over and like you (Matt Barnes) said, you got three players playing the same way that need the same thing.”
From his comments, it is clear that Garnett believes the Suns should break up their roster, which could end up happening in the offseason.
Phoenix was already trying to trade Beal this season, but due to his monster contract and no-trade clause, they were unable to find him a new home. They also listened to offers for Durant, which was a surprise to him and may lead to the two sides going their separate ways in the offseason.
Of course, if the Suns were to begin a rebuild, they would look to trade both Durant and Beal and build around Booker. Booker has made it clear that he wants to play in Phoenix for the entirety of his career, and he is also the youngest of the big three.
With the Suns struggling once again and if they are unable to turn things around, do not be surprised if they make some major changes in the offseason.
