Surprised Verdict: Chiefs QB Mahomes Shares Surprising Observation About New WR
The Kansas City Chiefs love a speedy receiver.
So when one became available, they jumped on the opportunity to add him.
On Monday, the Chiefs signed former New England Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton to the practice squad. And two days later, he was out on the field at practice.
So what does Patrick Mahomes think about Thornton’s potential?
“Obviously, in season (I) haven’t watched a ton of film on him, but just from the highlights that I have seen – I mean, (he has) a ton of big-play ability,” the Chiefs quarterback explained. “Someone that has a big frame – I didn’t realize how tall he was until he got in the building. I’m excited to see him on the practice field working and I’m sure guys like Carson (Wentz) and them will give him chances downfield and we’ll get to see that speed.
“(He has) a lot of talent (and) a lot of ability and I think it will be good to get him worked in within the offense and see what he can do.”
A former second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Thornton was waived after the Patriots activated DT Christian Barmore this past weekend. Thornton was taken by New England with pick No. 50 in 2022, which Kansas City actually traded to the Patriots.
Thornton was never able to cement himself as a true threat with the Patriots, but now he gets a fresh start. And there is one thing about Mahomes’ comments that can provide some excitement for Chiefs Kingdom.
The star quarterback said that Thornton has a “big frame.” While many might not think much of that, it’s an interesting addition for the Chiefs, and that’s because Kansas City has notoriously given Mahomes undersized receivers over the years.
So having a guy like this who also has insane speed could provide Mahomes with a new weapon.
Throughout his two and a half seasons with the Patriots, Thornton recorded just 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns.
While he is starting on the Chiefs practice squad, there is no better opportunity to prove himself. He even has a three-time Super Bowl championship quarterback who can help him out.
