The Biggest Trade of the Offseason: Astros and Cubs Working on a Deal That Could Change Everything

It seems like the Houston Astros are exploring their options for trading right fielder Kyle Tucker. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Astros are targeting Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki and corner infielder Isaac Paredes in a possible trade.

This move is likely motivated by Tucker’s contract situation, as he’s entering the final year of his arbitration. The Astros might be looking to get some value in return before he becomes a free agent. It’s worth noting that the Astros have been linked to several trade discussions involving Tucker, with teams like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox also expressing interest. However, the proposed deal with the Cubs seems to be a more a recent development.

Astros, Cubs Discuss Possible Trade Involving Kyle Tucker, Isaac Paredes

The Astros reportedly want major league players, but Rosenthal reported that any deal for Tucker from Chicago must include a prospect.

“Talks are fluid, and the teams have exchanged a variery of names. Any Cubs package for Tucker, 27, likely would include prospects as well. Third baseman Cam Smith, Chicago’s first-round pick in 2024, is another player in whom the Astros are interested.”

However, league sources told Rosenthal that the Cubs are highly unlikely to trade Suzuki. Instead, the Cubs may be more open to dealing first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger in a separate trade. The Astros’ pursuit in Suzuki and Paredes suggests that the team is committed to remaining competitive, even if they trade Tucker and lose free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. The Astros are currently negotiating with Bregman.

Astros’ Reluctance to Offer Big Contracts

The Astros could part with Tucker, who is eligible for free agency in 2025. Tucker’s potential contract value is estimated to between $400 million to $500 million, following Juan Soto‘s record-breaking $765 million deal with the New York Mets. Astros owner Jim Crane has been hesistant to sign players to massive deals, which might lead to Tucker’s departure. This reluctance could also impact the future of Bregman altogether. The Yankees are among several teams purusing Tucker, a three-time All-Star and former Gold Glove and Sliver Slugger winner.

To acquire Tucker, Joel Sherman of The New York Post suggests the Yankees might offer a package including American League Rookie of the Year winner Luis Gil. A trade involving Tucker would significantly improve the Astros lineup and the Yankees offseason strategy. It could also influence the market for other free agents and trade targets.
