The Clutch Gene: McDavid and Draisaitl Prove Themselves to be the Most Clutch Players in NHL History
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are undoubtedly the best 1-2 punch in the NHL, and in the most clutch times, they’ve proven it over their careers.
Draisaitl scored the overtime goal in the Oilers last game over the San Jose Sharks with an assist from McDavid, which puts the pair within striking distance of a lauded NHL record.
McDavid and Draisaitl are now tied for 40 career overtime points each, which puts them third and fourth place in NHL history for overtime points, only behind Crosby and Malkin.
It’s interesting to not see any great names from the past on this list, but modern overtime rules have greatly increased the amount of scoring in the final frame – where the Oilers stars shine the brightest.
With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the back end of their careers, it’s a sure bet that the Oilers stars will greatly surpass them, and set new record for points in clutch time.
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl Will Set Record For Most Overtime Points in NHL History
Leon Draisaitl in particular is having a special season this year, being the Oilers top goal scorer and driving a dominant second line on his own – while still pairing with McDavid to decide games.
Draisaitl is playing well enough this season to earn some nods for the Hart Trophy and the Selke Trophy this season. Add with that dominant overtime numbers, and it will only help his case.
It’s almost normal that Connor McDavid would put up otherworldly stats at this point, but to see Draisaitl continually delivering on being a game-breaking talent and proving the rest of the NHL wrong is a great sight to see.
After signing his 8 year record setting extension, Draisaitl is making good on the Oilers commitment. He’ll be an Oiler for life, and go down as one of the greatest players in NHL history.
