The Gloves are Off: Matthews Respond to McDavid’s Crossbar Challenge with a Billboard Blast
Connor McDavid laid down a challenge, and Auston Matthews has one-upped the stakes.
Earlier this week, the Edmonton Oilers’ superstar sent out a cryptic tweet, challenging Matthews to go ‘crossbar and in’. The tweet sent the hockey world into a frenzy, and it hasn’t taken long for Matthews to respond, sending out a tweet of his own on Friday.
While some members of Leafs Nation were hoping this was the beginning of taking their friendship to another level, potentially becoming teammates when McDavid has the chance to hit the free-agent market in a couple of summers, it’s likely a joint-ad campaign coming from two of the biggest names in the NHL.
Look no further, McDonalds could very well be involved here. Timing is everything, they say, and McDonald’s Canada was quick to get involved with a tweet of their own earlier this week, stating that ‘something was going to change the game forever’.
Bold take, indeed, but when you have two NHL superstars, who both captain Canadian franchises, it certainly makes a level of sense for the massive fast-food chain to get involved. Matthews and McDavid have trained together for several summers, and have quickly become fast friends off the ice over their careers, perhaps they are taking things to a whole new level in the advertising world.
As for on the ice, Matthews missed his sixth consecutive game Thursday, when the Maple Leafs defeated the New York Islanders 2-1. Matthews aggravated an upper-body ailment during a December 20 game against the Buffalo Sabres. In 24 games this season, the Maple Leafs’ captain has recorded 11 goals and 23 points.
While Matthews hasn’t been very busy on the ice of late, it sounds like he’ll be kicking things up a notch off the ice, with McDavid and potentially McDonalds involved.
