The Pat Riley-LeBron James Feud! The Shocking Reason Behind LeBron James Departure from the Heat
Pat Riley’s methods have come under the microscope recently amid the whole Jimmy Butler saga, as the Miami Heat traded him to the Golden State Warriors.
Riley has been a polarizing figure over the years, that is for sure. Nobody can deny the success he has enjoyed.
He won one Championship as a player, one as an assistant coach, five as a coach and then two as an executive. That is a lot of rings. But could he have won even more?
Both his rings as an executive came while LeBron James was with the Heat. In that four-year spell, the team made four consecutive trips to the NBA finals, winning twice.
LeBron would end up leaving the Heat to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers though. And Riley’s micromanagement might have been a big reason behind that.
According to Nico Martinez on FadeAway World, while speaking on the ‘Underground Lodge’ podcast, Dwyane Wade said: “He loves chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. And so when LeBron walks on the plane with a bag of food, one bag is all cookies, one bag is what his chef has prepared for him to eat because he eats a certain way. So we get on the plane and we play cards at the front of the plane and at some point LeBron is like ‘Hey, bring me those cookies!’ And one day they had to come and whisper in his ear and tell him there weren’t any more cookies on the plane.”
Of course, that seems like a very small thing and one which would not have caused LeBron to make such a career-altering decision. But things like those can add up, especially when every other team in the league would be happy to have you.
Wade went on to add: “It was too much micromanaging at that point. You’re talking about a team that went to four Finals in a row.
“You don’t need to micromanage us, and I felt that Riles went a little too far with his micromanaging at points like that. He’s a grown man, you don’t take the cookies away from us. And this seems small but when I get on the plane, I want this because this is what gets me through. I gotta have my comforts on the way or I ain’t gonna be me. Riles takes all those comforts away when he’s hot.“
LeBron would go on to enjoy a ton of success after leaving the Heat. He won two more Championships, one with the Cavaliers and then one with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers look like contenders once again, having added Luka Doncic recently. On the other hand, the Heat seem to be at a crossroads after Butler’s trade. Do not be surprised if they try to bring in a superstar in the summer.
