Trent McDuffie’s Interception Tale is Mind-Blowing: Chiefs’ Rookie CB Shares Wild Story Behind First Pick
The Kansas City Chiefs picked up their fourth-straight victory on Sunday when they traveled to face the Cleveland Browns.
It was a big day for the Chiefs’ defense, who forced six turnovers. Three of those turnovers came through interceptions by Browns quarterback Jameis Winston.
His last interception, which came early in the fourth quarter, went to third-year cornerback Trent McDuffie. It was an especially special play for McDuffie, not only because it ended a promising Browns drive, but because it was also the first interception of his career.
After the game, McDuffie discussed the play, sharing the wild story behind how the jumbotron at Huntington Bank Field gave him a huge assist.
“Yeah, man, a blessing,” said McDuffie. “Right place, right time. During the play, I was in man-to-man and the funny thing is, for whatever reason, I glanced up at the jumbotron because it was a scramble drill and just saw him launch it. I was like, ‘That’s to my side, so let me just turn around.’ And I caught the ball!”
McDuffie continued, discussing what getting his first-career interception meant to him.
“Special,” McDuffie said. “A lot of emotions. Finally did it after two-and-a-half years but also, during the time of when I did it. They were driving down the field, they were trying to get back into the game, really, and they were putting together a pretty good drive. Being able to get that pick and kind of stop that momentum, for me, was huge.”
In his first year as the Chiefs’ top cornerback, McDuffie has quickly emerged as one of the best at his position and a reliable leader on Kansas City’s defense.
