Unbelievable: Cowboys’ Coaching Carousel Takes Shocking Turn: Mike McCarthy’s Tenure End in Stunning Fashion Due to…

For many months it’s been speculated that 2024 would be Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s last year with the team unless he led them on a deep playoff run.

But after a recent run of success, it’s beginning to look like he could be back – unless something unexpected happens. That something being McCarthy deciding that he’ll be the one to leave the Cowboys rather than let the Cowboys show him the door.

In a recent feature for USA Today, Jarrett Bell speculated that McCarthy has the power to leave the Cowboys on his own volition and see if he can get a new job in an environment where he will not be looked down on as much for struggling in the postseason. Bell pointed out that McCarthy’s agent is Don Yee, who has had success in finding perfect matches for the likes of Jim Harbaugh and Sean Payton in recent years.

“But what if McCarthy, with his contract up, decides that he’s had enough of the intense scrutiny that comes with coaching arguably the most high-profile team in the NFL?” Bell wrote.

“With his experience, a resume that includes a Super Bowl victory with the Packers and three straight 12-win campaigns with the Cowboys, and a track record for bringing out the best in quarterbacks, McCarthy could be a hot item on the open market.”

It’s not a terrible idea if you think about it. McCarthy went 12-5 in three straight seasons prior to this one and most franchises would happily give a lifetime contract to a coach capable of getting those kinds of results even with only one playoff win to show for it.

That said, McCarthy seems to love his job and there’s every reason to believe that he plans to keep going until he either wins a Super Bowl or is forced out.

Though at 61 years of age, retirement may not be out of the question either. He’s coached all but one year since 2006 and has been coaching football continuously since 1987.

Just because Jerry Jones appears to want McCarthy back in 2025, it doesn’t mean he’ll get him.
