Wilyer Abreu has started the 2025 MLB season on fire for the Red Sox.
Boston manager Alex Cora is rewarding Abreu’s efforts.
On Sunday, Abreu will bat cleanup for the first time this season. He has spent most of the year in the 6-spot before this two-place promotion.
The 25-year old from Venezuela has been a revelation for Boston in the early going.
Even after a recent cold stretch, Abreu is batting .362 with four doubles, three home runs, two steals and 12 RBI.
Abreu is a patient stud at the plate, too, having walked 11 times compared to his 11 strikeouts.
The AL leader in on-base percentage is none other than Abreu, who reaches at a .483 clip.
Combined with a .638 slugging percentage, Abreu has a 1.121 OPS.
The Red Sox dropped Triston Casas down to sixth in a corresponding lineup move.
“Willy is swinging the bat well,” Cora told reporters before Sunday’s game. “Triston put some good swings two nights ago but I felt like today was a good day to have this configuration.”
The right-handed Trevor Story remains in the 5-hole between the two lefty batters.
The Red Sox enter Sunday just 1-5 in their last six games, with only 11 runs total.
Abreu has been tasked with providing a jolt.
