The Chicago Bears did the one thing they said they wouldn’t do with Caleb Williams. Failing him during his rookie season.

Heading into the 2024 season, everyone begged the Bears not to go into the season with yet another lame duck head coach leading the expected franchise quarterback. Instead, they did it again and fired head coach Matt Eberflus after 12 games.

Now, 13 weeks into his NFL career, Williams has been forced by the team to overcome a head coaching change and three offensive coordinator changes.

On Monday, Bears’ interim head coach Thomas Brown said the turmoil should not be viewed as an excuse for Williams, but it should be viewed as malpractice by the team.

As the Bears look ahead to the future, those in power at least recognize now that Williams is the future of the team and the first stepping stone to build off of.

“We have a quarterback in Caleb Williams who’s shown that he’s very special, and in the right environment, he can become even more special than he already has shown,” Bears team president Kevin Warren said on Monday.

The next step comes from hiring the best coach to steer the rest of Williams’ career in Chicago. While meeting with the media, general manager Ryan Poles didn’t confirm how much say Williams will have in the decision, but he will keep his franchise quarterback in mind when making the upcoming hire.

“Again, when we go back to what’s best for the Bears, his development is critical,” Poles said. “We need to make sure that there is alignment in that space so he can get better… I don’t know about specific input, but it’s got to be a major part of an interview process–making sure that there is a plan for a young quarterback in this league.”

That plan involves conducting an exhausting search of multiple different coaching candidate to see which one embodies what it means to be “a leader of men” and is best qualified to lead the Chicago Bears.

“We will work closely. We will together on a daily basis to make sure that we bring the best person to the Chicago Bears as our permanent head football coach,” Warren added. “You have our word on that. It will be an exhaustive search. It will be organized. It will be diligent. We will do it the right way.”

Poles will remain as the team’s general manager and work hand-in-hand with Warren to complete the search. This time around, Poles knows where he team stands and what kind of coach he’s looking for to lead his team into the future.

“I think the most critical thing is that I know from the roster that we have right now exactly what this team needs because of the core group that we have here,” Poles explained. “Before, that wasn’t really the case of understanding who is going to be here. It was a really tough situation to walk in to. Knowing exactly the core of our team and what traits are going to help get that team to be a championship caliber roster.”

With the quarterback and roster in place, the organization can now conduct a well thought out plan to put the right head coach in place for hopefully years to come. If not, it won’t just be Williams that the organization would be failing.
