Brian Windhorst sounds off on the New York Knicks’ case as 2025 NBA Championship contenders .
After spending years in mediocrity, the New York Knicks are finally looking like a championship-caliber team this season.
They have their best record in 28 years after 54 games, as they head into the NBA All-Star break and hold the third seed in the Eastern Conference.
Despite those achievements, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst wasn’t too convinced with the idea of the Knicks causing problems come playoff time.
Brian Windhorst labels New York Knicks ‘pretenders’
There has been no doubt about the Knicks’ talent on the offensive end of the floor. However, Windy is concerned about their somewhat lackluster defense and poor record against the top NBA teams this season.
“With respect, I have to say they are pretenders. Listen, they’ve been so good offensively, Brunson and Towns are having great seasons, but they’re 0-5 against the Celtics, Cavs, and Thunder, and I have to honor that,” the ESPN expert stated.
The Knicks’ record is a direct reflection of their starters’ amazing skills this season. Even Channing Frye doubted the Knicks’ chances of dominating in the postseason because of a lack of a deep bench.
As for Windy, he simply cannot look past the Knicks’ winless record against the top two teams in the East and the No. 1 seed in the West.
The Knicks have a chance to change the narrative
With that said, around 30 games still left to be played in the 2024-25 NBA season. The final stretch of the season can make or break a team’s case as a true title contender.
Windhorst believes the Knicks have that shot right after the NBA All-Star break as they face multiple good teams in that stretch.
“Now next weekend, Friday in Cleveland, Sunday in Boston, they can start to change the narrative right out of the break,” Windy continued.
He concluded: “Mitchell Robinson is back soon maybe that’ll help them, but if they can’t beat a team ahead of them in the standings once, how can I think they can do it four times over multiple series?”
Robinson’s return seems key for the Knicks. After all, the 26-year-old is a defensive juggernaut and he could balance the Knicks’ offense-heavy approach.
