However, Arteta began his rebuild, and after many ups and downs, the North Londoners have become one of the best sides in the world.
Arteta is definitely the biggest reason behind that success at Arsenal, but this wouldn’t have been possible without some of his key players.
Mikel Arteta makes honest admission about Arsenal stars Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba
Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Arsenal have had the best defence in the Premier League.
The Gunners conceded fewer goals than any other club last term, and they have started this campaign brilliantly as well.
The big stars in Arsenal’s defence are William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.
The two centre-halves have played together since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, and they have got better and better every week.
Nobody can argue about the fact that Saliba and Gabriel are the two best defenders in the Premier League right now, but you probably wouldn’t have bet on this a few years ago.
Arteta was quizzed about his two star centre-backs in his press conference on Tuesday. The Arsenal boss was asked whether he can believe how good Saliba and Gabriel’s partnership has been.
The Spaniard issued an honest response.
“No, the reality is no,” he said, as relayed on HaytersTV. “Because you have to see the development day by day. Obviously, we believed they could become really good.
“That togetherness and chemistry is unique, it’s something that they built. It is something that happened very organically as well.
“I’m very proud to have them the level they are showing is incredible.”
Arteta needs to protect Saliba and Gabriel
Saliba and Gabriel are arguably Arsenal’s most important players.
The duo are definitely among the first names on the team sheet every week, and their partnership is one of the biggest reasons why the Gunners are capable of going toe-to-toe with any club in the world.
However, Arsenal will play many, many games this season, and the last thing Arteta would want is to see either Gabriel or Saliba get injured.
We think the Gunners boss should give the two defenders a break at some point. The game against Bolton on Wednesday night is a great opportunity for the two players to get some rest.
However, it remains to be seen if Arteta will leave both players out of his side in the same game.
