There is growing concern for Toronto Blue Jays fans that the organization and the first baseman won’t get a contract extension approved between both parties.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, however, the team isn’t looking to trade him.
“Oh, and for those who think perhaps Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would become available if he can’t come to terms on a contract extension before his Feb. 18 deadline: The Blue Jays continue to insist to other executives that the slugger isn’t going anywhere. There is a price for everyone, yes, but Guerrero’s would be exceptionally high,” Passan wrote.
The Blue Jays are determined that Guerrero isn’t going anywhere, which isn’t good news for a Cubs team prepared to spend high for a World Series contending team.
The Cubs could’ve used that money spared after trading outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees in mid-December, and they have the prospects to get a trade done.
Last year, Guerrero was one of the best hitters in baseball by accounting for 199 hits, 98 runs, and 30 home runs on a .323 batting average.
This earned him his fourth consecutive All-Star selection and named him an All-MLB First Team selection for the second time in his career. The best part is that Guerrero will be only 26 years old next month.
Hope is not completely lost for the Cubs, who are looking to inquire about an All-Star player like Guerrero. The team and the first baseman still have less than a week to sort out the disputes, keeping them from getting an extension finalized.
After Feb. 18, the Cubs could make a run for a big-time hitter in a trade. Chicago currently has Michael Busch starting at first base on a one-year, $800,000 contract.
Getting Guerrero would take a lot of assets and the team would still have to make him one of the richest players in the league.
The Cubs might not seem to mind, however, as they might look to make Guerrero one of the biggest stars in a large market.
