Kidd on the Brink! Jason Kidd Future in Jeopardy Over Luka Doncic Fallout
A deeply unhappy night played out for the Dallas Mavericks in their recent loss to Sacramento.
The Sacramento Kings’ overtime winner at the Dallas Mavericks was the final brutal kick on a distressing night for the home team.
Reeling from fan protests over the Luka Doncic trade, unhappy spectators were seen being removed from the arena.
And with team legend Dirk Nowitzki choosing to attend Doncic’s debut in LA, the bad optics were matched by disastrous on-court events as Daniel Gafford suffered a knee injury.
Gafford joins Dereck Lively on the sidelines, along with Anthony Davis, injured on his debut, amid suggestions he was rushed into action too soon.
Jason Kidd fears
The nightmare series of events may have proved too much for Jason Kidd, who declined to hold a press conference after the loss to the Kings.
Veteran ESPN broadcaster Tony Kornheiser told PTI that he views the current state of the Dallas Mavericks as ‘disastrous’, and fears that if it continues, Jason Kidd might decide he has had enough.
“Anthony Davis comes back, that is curable. Today, it’s a disaster, they traded their best player, they now have no big men, Davis is out, Lively is out, Gafford is out, did I mention they traded their best player Luka Doncic, because I think that’s sort of important?
“They have fans screaming, they have an open fan revolt, they are throwing fans out of the arena like this is some kind of guerilla theater, I told you when we first talked about this trade that it was an insane trade, and whatever they did this year, it would cost the GM his job.
“I think it could cost the coach his job as well, I think it’s possible Jason Kidd looks around and says ‘you know what, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be here any more’.”
Challenged on his point, Kornheiser responded: “I didn’t say they should fire him. I said he may not want to be there. There’s an open fan revolt, nobody wants to play for them now.”
Kidd feelings on Doncic trade remain a mystery
As the Dallas Mavericks head coach, answerable to GM Nico Harrison, Kidd was never going to come out and publicly criticize the move to trade away Luka Doncic.
NBA star Draymond Green pointed out that Kidd’s body language in the initial post-Doncic press conference, describing him as ‘all over the place‘.
Kidd was tremendously supportive of Doncic during his time in Dallas, but while he remains in post, his true feelings on the trade are likely to be kept under wraps.
But if he did walk away, it would be a crushing blow to the under-pressure Mavericks’ front office, especially if he were to criticize the decision.
