The Luka Doncic trade is set to dominate the NBA agenda for years to come, such was the magnitude of the move, but that didn’t bring the Dallas Mavericks down to earth single-handedly.
The Dallas Mavericks, finalists just last season, are flirting with missing out on the playoffs altogether after having their roster gutted.
Add to that an injury nightmare straight from hell, and the Mavs are in an unenviable position, with the focus squarely on the Luka Doncic trade.
However, a move that has gone under the radar amidst the Doncic noise will hurt almost as much as the Slovenian’s move.

The Doncic trade that shook the foundations of the league happened on February 2 and just as the Mavs fans were picking up the pieces from an unpopular move, to put it politely, another trade followed.
That wouldn’t get much coverage since the player who left wasn’t exactly a marquee one or even a shining role player, but that has aged remarkably badly.
On February 4, Caleb Martin rocked up at the Mavericks, and out went a 2025 second-round pick with a certain fringe player by the name of Quentin Grimes.
Grimes arrived at Philadelphia 76ers as a distressed asset but the quickness with which he’s exploded has probably surprised even the player himself.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks, it fits right in line with the theme of their season where nothing has gone right for them.

10.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists/game in 47 games, of which there were only 12 starts. These are Grimes’ numbers for the Mavericks this season.
His previous career-high in points over a season was 11.3, which he set with the New York Knicks back in the 2022/23 season.
Now, after his latest explosion against the Houston Rockets where he went off for a career-high 46 points, he’s averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in 17 games for the 76ers, starting 14 of them.
This is not even a flash-in-the-pan performance either, as Grimes’ trade has earned Doncic comparisons for his previous outings where he crossed the 40-point mark.
Granted, there’s an asterisk this season over his performances because he’s playing for a 76ers squad that has effectively given up on the season.
However, the teams he’s up against haven’t, and the craftiness plus shooting he’s shown proves this is not a false dawn, Grimes is breaking out in real-time.
Imagine what his role could’ve been even after Doncic got traded, let alone him playing with the Slovenian.
Mavs had both and a roster that went to the Finals. Now they have neither and at risk of missing playoffs.
